…Journalists charged on ethics and principled journalism

A two-day
workshop on responsible reporting of the 2015 general elections for media
professionals and civil society organizations has ended in Uyo.
The
workshop which was organized by Vibram Nigeria Limited in collaboration with
Akwa Ibom state council of N.U.J. was attended by over 250 participants drawn
from all sections of the state mass media and civil societies.
The Event
which took place at Le’Meridien Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort was chaired by the State
Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Idongesit Ntem Isua. In her opening remarks,
the chief judge, Justice Ntem Isua commended Vibram Nigeria Limited for
organizing the workshop and urged members of the pen profession to adhere to
principles of good reportage.
Speaking,
the Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Austin Okojie
maintained that the commission had done a lot to ensure a free, transparent and
credible elections. He called on the electorates to go out en-masse and obtain
their Permanent Voter Cards.
The State
Director, Department of State Security Services, Mr. Tom Minti and the
representative of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achong assured
the people of the state that the security agencies had put everything in place
to ensure violence-free elections before, during and after the general
elections.
According
to paper presenters at the workshop, factual, accurate, balanced and fair reportage
is the ultimate objective of good journalism.
They advised members of the fourth estate of the realm still in practice
to promote Journalism as a respectable profession.
Among
eminent Journalists that presented Papers at the workshop include, Mr. Ray
Ekpu, Mr. Segun Adeniyi and Mr. Ogbuagu Anike among others.
The
participants (over 100 Journalists and civil society members)generally agreed
that there should be a follow-up workshop to ensure continuous updating of
their knowledge.
