A communiqué issued at the end of a 3-day meeting of the Central Working Committee/National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin, Edo State at Randekhi Royal Hotels on Saturday, September20, 2014.


The conference was attended by the National President and members of the Central Working Committee, Officials of the Six Zones, Chairmen and Secretaries of the 35 State’s Councils and Abuja, National Chairperson of NAWOJ and National Chairman of SWAN.
The NEC in Session observed a minute silence in honour of its dead members – Late Mr. Ndagane Akwu, former National President, Mr. Mohammed Khalid, former National Secretary and Mr. Dimgba Igwe of the Sun Newspapers
            
After extensive deliberations on various issues affecting journalists in the performance of their duties, the Nation and the forthcoming 2015 General Elections, the NEC in Session resolved as follows:

                  
1.     The Session commended the Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole for hosting the NUJ NEC meeting and applauded his administration for the various life-touching projects, erosion control and uncommon transformation of Benin, the State Capital and other parts of the State.
2.     The session also appreciated the Governor for accepting to pay the 22.5 percent Weigh-in (Risk) Allowance to Journalists in the employ of the State Government-owned Media establishments including information officers and supporting the NUJ State Council on its activities including the donation of a Bus.
3.     The Session also expressed appreciation to the Rivers State Government for instituting a N10 million Endowment Fund for the education of the children of the former President, late Mr. Ndagene Akwu and also encouraged members to contribute to the fund.
4.     The meeting also commended the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio for extending uncommon transformation to the State Council of NUJ by donating Five (5) brand new Toyato Hiace Buses and for regularly offering other numerous assistances.
5.     The NEC in session called on all State’s Councils to be e-compliant to facilitate easy communication flow between members and the National Secretariat. While frowning on lingering Court litigations affecting some State’s Councils, the NEC in Session called on members to always seek amicable resolutions of all grievances instead of going to Court.
6.     The NEC in Session, while examining the outbreak of Ebola Disease, commended the Federal and State Governments, particularly Lagos and Rivers, and various Agencies for steps taken to curb/eradicate the spread of Ebola Disease in the Country. It called for precautionary measures to be effectively put in place on the reopening of schools to avoid the spread of the virus.
7.     On the State of the Nation, the NEC in Session cautioned politicians against heating up the polity through making provocative utterances on sectional, tribal and religious issues, saying that such dispositions were capable of causing more security challenges in the country.
8.     That the Federal Government should continue to employ proactive measures in fighting insurgency in the country particularly in the North East. It also called for serious security measures to be put in place on the Waterways in the Niger Delta to curb piracy and avoidable incidences during the forthcoming 2015 General Elections.
9.     The NEC in Session expressed dismay at the deplorable state of Federal Roads across the Country, and urged the Federal Government to step up its current efforts in road repairs, maintenance and construction, to save road users and motorists avoidable cases of road mishap being experienced.
10.      The NEC in Session congratulated the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) for its 25th Anniversary and observed with commendation, the organization’s role in mobilizing female journalists   to have greater self actualization in the profession.
