I Lament For President Goodluck Jonathan

By Matts Udoaka
It is unfortunate that Goodluck Jonathan, the Nigerian charismatic leader who supposes this second time around, to have an easy walk into the State House in Aso Rock, is in the web of blistering logjam and utter confusion from his Party, the PDP. Our President in his secured official residence does not understand that it is not all the glittering things are gold. Many are fake flying materials that deceive men to believe that they are gold.
Despite the leverage in his performance over his predecessors, both military and civilian, despite his short period of delivery of the dividends of democracy to Nigerians, even though with his minor shortcomings as a human being, the President is dwelling in delusion, since he cannot decipher his real followers who actually want his success, from the imaginary ones who are mere actors that believe in what they can get than the corporate success of the ruling Party. The President maybe living in fools’ paradise if he actually claims that all the states in the south-south region are solidly behind him. Of course, having such a deceptive mind is very common with leaders who do not pin down their ears to listen to what transpires in different strata of the polity.

Akwa Ibom State is one of the states of the federation that wouldn’t allow the second coming of President Goodluck Jonathan to slip out of its fingers. Their common sentient of having a minority brother in the saddle of governance that in the past was winners take all situation, and a no go area reserved for the majority alone is enough to commit the Akwa Ibom people to use their heads to walk because of joy. Therefore, it is a sad commentary to recall that the state is divided against itself in its support to President Jonathan. The unity of Akwa Ibom State that has been historic is now a bye gone memory because the political gladiators in the state do not know a jot of what democracy is all about. They have failed to realize that the labyrinth dancer does not tell the story of his back, that it is only the onlooker who can tell.
Akwa Ibom people have come to terms with the rotational principle of the PDP at last. They have all decided to work together for the benefit of a single candidate from Eket Senatorial District. But one thing that over shadows their unity of purpose in this regard is that the game players have refused to drop the game on the table for the elements of democracy to recourse.  What is politics? Is it not compromising and flexibility?
If our people have refused to compromise is our house seen to be in order for us to accept that all is well? It is the compromise that is lacking in the midst of the Akwa Ibom people, and that keeps their house in tatters. Every component of grievance is handled with reckless arrogance. The state and the country are not considered first by an Akwa Ibom man. Then what brings about  the expected resounding victory for the President and the ruling party in the state? This is an illusion. It’s a charade that in the circumstance, some highly placed men keep  deceiving the President. What is better is for Jonathan to beware and avoid every Akwa Ibom man, especially those who pursue their personal interest more than that of the nation, no matter how highly placed. Anything short of that will hand in regret to Jonathan. This is unfortunate for the country.
That is the beginning of the misfortune of the ruling Party, which is the beginning of the woes of Goodluck Jonathan. The President and the PDP chieftains cannot afford to treat the dangling sword of Damocles hanging about the Akwa Ibom neck with levity.  The stakes are high, and very high indeed. It is no more time of noise making, as time of reality is now. What will be the end as the opposition has started their actual campaign in earnest? The President and the team of Party men must not allow the ills of a few people to affect Akwa Ibom State, as one weak link on a chain affects all the parts. The people of Akwa Ibom State are on a cross road. Tongues are wagging highly now for the misdeed of a few. The state is really losing out as a result of personal ambition that is being pursued in total disregard to politics as a game of numbers.
Even though we might be relying on irregularities that used to see us presenting fake figures as the vote cast, this faking is always controlled by human beings who put in their all to ensure that the fake becomes the real.
Rather, in a prevailing circumstance as of now, most of those who normally stand up for PDP to succeed are aggrieved because their favoured candidates are not given a level playing field to test their popularity. Everyone develops a cold feet because they observe the situation as being abnormal; and when two elephants engage themselves in a duel, the grass becomes the object that takes the heat. What our State political gladiators are doing will bring a sad tale on Jonathan’s chances if not handled with care.
The concern we all lament for, is that the President is not being told the truth by our people. I don’t see Jonathan choosing to allow what is not acceptable generally by the people to become a sort of confusion that divides the loyalty of the people that were one way for him. The Akwa Ibom boat is now heading for the rock. A lot of calculation needs to be done to arrive at an acceptable solution to the logjam in Akwa Ibom State. Otherwise, the PDP would have itself to blame for not handling the state with the wisdom it deserves.
…Nigeria’s Ceded Land By Obasanjo

Having said that much, it is irking to still fold our arms to allow the Cameroonians to cease our land (Bakassi) to themselves due to Obasanjo’s inept legal team led by Prince Bola Ajigbola. A few days ago, the Cameroonians were celebrating their victory of Bakassi land over Nigeria. A land they do not have. Here in Nigeria, our government celebrates the Green Tree Agreement in place of our bonafide land on yearly basis. Bakassi is at our backyard at Enwang. The distance from Bakassi to Cameroun is farer than going from Enwang. The former President Obasanjo, who always claim to know everything much did not do a thorough home work to convince the Europeans who are having the exclusive knowledge of their environment to know that the Bakassi land is a delta environment between Akwa Ibom and Cross River State. What the Presidency should do now is to exhume that case and pursue it with vigor to its logical conclusion. No green Tree Agreement should blindfold Nigeria into allowing the Cameroons to claim our lands from all the angles. Jonathan would do much to engage a team of lawyers from abroad and home, to study and know how that case would end if exhumed. Where a Nigerian land was ceded to another country by another President, Obasanjo could have written a book on his wisdom and the foolishness of that President. We want an action from Jonathan now that Obasanjo is still alive to show the world that Obasanjo’s wisdom is a nullity to that of any President he does not regard.
