Time Check for Eket Senatorial District Now Or Never

By Matts Udoaka
This piece in particular belongs to the discernible minds of the folks from the Eket Senatorial District. What these people have experienced in recent times leaves much to be desired in a political atmosphere that can make or mar the growth of a people.
As of now, the time of speculation has gone, and it should be consigned to the dirty bin forever. All hands should be on deck to pull the Eket Senatorial District turn to produce the next governor of the state. A choice has been made which people felt the procedure had failed the global best practice when considering what democracy stands for. But such procedure was not new in our political clime.
Obong Victor Attah, our resource control hero had tried it and failed because the fringes were not tidied by him. What remains, irrespective of what people may think is that a man from the Eket senatorial district (how be it) has emerged. He is not from another senatorial district to attract squabbling since he is qualified to lead the state, the senatorial district should sweep any discrepancy arising from his emergence under the carpet to avoid causing a bad luck to the senatorial district. Politics being what it is, and going by the spirit of agreement which made the other two Senatorial Districts to take their turn, nothing should be done for the people of Eket Senatorial District to forfeit their turn now. Otherwise the Eket Senatorial District may become the farmer who denied himself food.
Mr Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, PDP govenrorship
Candidate in 2015 election

With all sense of modesty, the Eket Senatorial District is the only district that parades all-time qualified men – even up untill now. What is on top is to see the thin line and accept the best choice among the present three candidates. The calculation in terms of the best is the experience in public and corporate life, the ability to keep the head down when chased about with large sums of money and the ability to attract investors into the state. For every other thing, all the candidates are good.

On the G22 team, I salute their courage and astuteness. I share their position for equity to prevail, that is the reason I can say like the epigram of Apostle Paul that they have fought a good fight. They have accomplished their faith in democracy. They have carried their war to the enemy’s territory, so to say. But they will have nothing to lose by remaining together rather than allowing this past experience to tear them apart. The Eket Senatorial District is their own as of now. They should not because of some political intrigues throw away the baby with the bath water. The Senatorial District is their own, and their party being the government, has enough advantage for them than teaming up with the opposition. Our young men have to understand that it is difficult to unseat a government in Nigeria, therefore the thought of having the opposition at the centre and in the state should be waved off as a mirage. Good enough, a lot of those brothers of ours in G22 have not pitched their camp in other parties. What they need to do now is to come together and ensure a total renaissance to prepare them against the future. Eket Senatorial District has been wandering along in disarray. There has been no cohesion before now. Only as their fabric has been seriously infested now that they have the G22 after which some others still consider themselves working alone. If the Eket Senatorial District has been uniting, the issue of taking their grievances to a rebuffed turf shouldn’t have arisen. Our people will not say that in Eket Senatorial District, there is no one that President Jonathan can listen to.
All that is required is unity of purpose that enhances a people to pull the wool when necessary.
However, it is still our belief that President Goodluck Jonathan will make amends for his action that amounted to nothing but his rejection of a great majority of the people of Eket Senatorial District. But that does not preclude closing of ranks by the people.
For Oro nation, what should be understood is that governor will come and go, but Oro nation remains forever. So if they miss having a governor now, they can have one in future as Akwa Ibom will still have more governors in future. The people of Oro should take their unity with the other fringes of the state seriously.
From their position of strength that is not enough for them to decide for others, it would be the best thing for a total unity and negotiations that the other component parts of the state could stand by and support them. No parts of Akwa Ibom State have a total reserve to govern. So is the case of Nigeria, that a particular tribe disturbs itself as if being the President is only their birth right. As Nigeria is for all of us, Akwa Ibom State belongs to all the people of Akwa Ibom too.
The Oro people must beware of the sheep in human clothing that would offer them a lesser position than being a governor. Any such attempt should be rejected. It is time to note that no one can ever weep for the dead than the bereaved.

Politicians are unpredictable. People should be careful that they do not toy with their ambition because of empty promises. What should propitiate the Oro people is not being a deputy governor. Oro should remember the past and maintain their position with the ruling party. The foundation of the Eket Senatorial District should not be deprecated by jumping from one party to another. The Senatorial District and its people are wise enough to decipher their real friend from the imaginary. They are good to say yes to an issue and to say no to others. The entire people should come together for a forum that will enable their voice to be respected. They should not sit down and watch until things start going bad before they have G22 to speak. Enough of remaining like the African oil bean tree leaves, not big enough to tie something with, and not big to clean children’s anus after defecating.
